Finance - Estate Planning and Related Financial Advice for Older Adults (Prince County)
This course will be taught over two sessions of 2.5 hours, each with a midpoint break. The two-part course will review the issues that you should be considering now as you plan the transfer of your assets to your loved ones (or to charity) later in life or upon your death. The instructor has designed the course based on common questions he has been asked, and his knowledge of unexpected financial issues faced by individuals (or their executors) because of what they did not know. Time for questions will be provided throughout the course.
The topics covered in each part may change, based on the questions and interests of the audience, but this is the agenda - Part 1 will cover:
- the estate process and what happens to your property upon death - with or without a Will;
- the importance of your Will, and choosing the right executor;
- what is probate, what does it cost, and is it worthwhile trying to avoid probate?
- the risks versus benefits of joint ownership;
- planning and issues related to your home, cottage and other real estate. Note that housing and long-term care issues will be a brief high level overview only. For more detailed coverage, see the course titled, "Housing and Related Financial Issues for Older Adults."
In Part 2, topics will include:
- Special Will planning issues - second marriages, location of your assets, foreign citizens, etc.
- Powers of Attorney and Personal Care Directives
- Advance Care Planning and Health Care Directives
- Life and travel Insurance
- Taxes on death
- The benefits of Charitable giving
- If time permits - Canada Pension Plan timing and survivor benefits
This course will not discuss savings and investment matters, nor the timing of your RRSP withdrawals, which are covered in the course “Finance - Tax Planning for Older Adults.” It also excludes issues related to businesses, corporations and trusts.
