
Finance – Saving, Investing and Protecting Your Money for Older Adults (Queens County)
This course will be taught over two sessions of 2.5 hours each, each with a midpoint break. The two-part course will educate you on how to save, invest and protect your money appropriately for your personal situation, and help you ensure you understand how your financial advisors are investing your money. Time for questions will be provided throughout the session.
The topics covered in each part may change, based on the questions and interests of the audience, but this is the agenda - Part 1 will cover:
- advice on choosing and ensuring your financial advisor is working in your best interest;
- reviewing the impact of inflation on your retirement needs;
- when to draw from your RRSP and what you need to do with your RRSP at age 71;
- explaining the basics of annuities (i.e., buying your own pension);
- defining the various types of investments and related risks (e.g. fixed income, equities);
- your need for an emergency fund;
- how to safely invest the money that you may need in the short-term; and,
- a review of annuities and securities that pay interest.
Part 2 will start by discussing your choices for investing money you will not need for a long time. We will
- define risk;
- explain stock market;
- what are reasonable expectations for rates of return (based on FP Canada guidance);
- explain the nature of stocks, mutual funds, exchange traded funds, etc.;
- explain the different ways of investing in these products, and consider the your fees
As time permits, the discussion may move to avoiding scams and high risk investments, and how you can help your children or grandchildren.
Important: The instructor does not hold a license to sell securities, and will not be giving any specific advice on individual investment recommendations, such as what stocks you should buy or sell. This course is designed to provide basic education so you have a better understanding of your savings and investments, and you should use this to meet with your own financial advisor for personalized advice with which you feel comfortable.

Requirements | You are encouraged to look at your investment statements before the course to see what you paid in fees to your advisor or financial institution related to your portfolio last year. This would be the case if you own anything other than term deposits and guaranteed investment certificates (GICs) paying interest, such as stocks and mutual funds. If you do not see anything, all your advisor and ask them - the fees may be called commissions, trailer fees, investment counsel fees or similar. You may find this information useful during the course discussions.
To make the most of this course, write your questions down in advance; bring them with you or send them to the instructor before hand upon his invitation to do so. Answers will be provided in a general way without dealing with specific personal information. If you change your mind or cannot attend, other members may be able to take your place and/or the instructor can reduce the number of handouts made available, so please respect others by cancelling your registration as early as possible. |

After all, you are the person who is accountable for the money you make or lose, and if you choose the wrong investment or the wrong advisor, you hold all the risk. |

Course FacilitatorBlair CorkumBlair is a Chartered Professional Accountant who has provided tax and financial advice for 48 years. He is unique in PEI because he focuses primarily on giving hourly based, fee-only financial advice as a Certified and Registered Financial Planner. He does not sell any investments, insurance, or other products, and does not receive any commissions or referral fees, thereby ensuring his independence and objectivity. Now semi-retired, his engagements are primarily one-time only meetings with older adults giving financial advice in the areas of retirement planning and long-term care matters, offering second opinions on the appropriateness of existing financial plans, and assisting with tax and estate planning, in addition to his financial divorce counselling.
