Historic Tours: Farmers' Bank, Doucet House, St. Augustine's Church and Barachois Inn (Queens County)
This tour will cover various historic sites, all within easy walking distance. The group will be divided to tour the sites. The tour will include a stop at the Barachois Inn. Tea, coffee and cookies will be served at the inn.
Farmers' Bank was first built as a school and community centre. Later it also operated as the smallest bank in Canada from 1864-1894. This building is a legacy of Father Belcourt who developed many successful projects with the Acadian community and Napoleon III of France.
Doucet House, built in 1772 by Jean Doucet, is the oldest known surviving house on PEI. It was fully restored to its original condition based on the sketches of artist Robert Harris who vacationed in this area.
Church of St. Augustine opened in 1838 though not completely finished at the time. It became known as the pro-cathedral of the diocese and many priestly ordinations took place there over the years. It is the oldest Catholic church on the Island.
The Barachois Inn is Prince Edward Island's definitive five-star country inn in every way - the authentic heritage of an 1880 home cast in the halo of St. Augustin's imposing church steeples - beautifully appointed, rich with antiques, superb breakfasts, immersion in comfort and privacy and the genuine hospitality of the MacDonald family.
