“Hidden Community”, creating a liveable space for one another, interacting with people, plants and animals as we move through the cycles of life – age, family, education, work, and leisure. Share information and life experiences: to find what we can, use what we can, plan what we can, and change what we can. Focus on the nature of community—spatial, social and multicultural. Daily activity range of community residents. Number of friends and acquaintances, their shared values and activities. Social distance between people, plants and animals, possibility of “zero social distance.” The role of values in community building. The intended community planning decisions and their unintended consequences The discussions will have a multi-disciplinary flavor.

ObjectivesTo have an opportunity to interact with one another and share, how as participant observers, we are master weavers of our own fabric of life. Whether rich or poor, our ultimate human capital is the type of character we develop in social interaction, based on the value systems we have made our own and the life chances we create for one another as we share time and space. In fact, the “hidden community” we create.
Teaching ProcessPresent multi-disciplinary insights in everyday language and provide exercises to facilitate sharing. The aim is to provide a comfortable place to share and enrich each other’s lives by what we have learned in life, and new directions we might take.

Course Facilitator

Sinikka Dixon

Dr. Sinikka Dixon is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual Sociologist with a passion for the human story. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of California in 1982, with specializations in Urban Sociology, Social Inequality, and Social Psychology. She is Professor Emeritus of Sociology from Burman University, Alberta, and is active in Research on Aging RC11 of International Sociological Association. Her hobbies are: travel, weaving, gardening, swimming and learning new things. Having lived and traveled in many countries, she has experienced first-hand cultures in Africa, Australia, Brazil, Europe, Indonesia, North and Central America, Philippines and Suriname. As a member of Canadian, American and International Sociological Associations, she has presented papers in many Sociological Congresses.


The facilitator has a multi-cultural, multi-lingual background with specializations in Urban Sociology, Social Inequality, and Social Psychology. Professor Emerita of Sociology.
